This Fall, Penn State Landscape Architecture students descended upon Carrick to create professional-quality designs for three areas of the community:

PhillipsPark
portions of Brownsville Road
our vast Greenways.

The students began their project by learning about the rich cultural history of the area, and then talking with local residents. Some of you may have even run into them on Brownsville Road, surveying passersby. Their goal was to take community history and perception into consideration when creating their designs. This way, the designs reflect the wants and needs of the community, and will serve as inspiration for the evolution of Carrick.

If you'd like to know more about their designs, be sure to attend their Public Presentation & Open House on Wednesday, November 16th, 6-8 PM at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church (2415 Saw Mill Run Blvd).
Nightly lane closures are set to begin Sunday and last throughout the week near the Route 51/Route 88 intersection as crews perform drilling operations as they design future improvements in the area.

PennDOT District 11 officials said there will be short term lane closures on Route 51, Route 88 and Provost Road in Whitehall Borough and Pittsburgh's Overbrook section. Restrictions will occur nightly, Sunday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Outlined restrictions include:

*Sunday and Monday, July 10 and 11: lane closures on Route 51 southbound.
*Tuesday, July 12: lane closures on eastbound Route 88.
*Wednesday, July 13: lane closures on Provost Road at the Route 51 intersection.
*Thursday, July 14: lane closures on northbound Route 51.

Delays are expected, PennDOT officials said.

Construction for the $14 million improvement project for the Route 51/Route 88 intersection in the Overbrook section of Pittsburgh and Whitehall Borough is set to begin in 2013 and be completed in 2014.

The project includes the replacement of six bridges along the corridor that have been deemed "structurally deficient," officials have said. Emergency repairs already have been made on some of the structures.

Plans are for a "jug handle," or ramp-like structure, to be built on the northbound side of the state route to direct traffic around the area — going behind the Rite Aid Pharmacy and intersecting with Route 51, where Ivyglen Street sits.

PennDOT officials have said they estimate the project will result in a 50 to 60 percent reduction in traffic delays at the Route 51 and Route 88 intersection.

<sites:pageName>5188laneclosures</sites:pageName><sites:revision>4</sites:revision>

BECKS RUN LANE CLOSURES

Work on a new water main will cause traffic restrictions on Becks Run
Road in the city and Baldwin Borough starting next week, Pennsylvania
American Water announced.

An alternating one-way traffic pattern will start at 7 a.m. Tuesday
and be in effect through late September as crews continue work on a
new 42-inch main as part of the $101 million Becks Run pumping station
and water treatment plant project.
Poor weather conditions have delayed the opening of Becks Run Road until early November, Pennsylvania American Water Co. officials said Friday.

Closures along Becks Run, in Baldwin Borough and Pittsburgh, began in late August to allow for the installation of approximately 2,900 feet of new 42-inch piping to be installed for a new water main. The construction is part of an improvement project to Pennsylvania American Water’s Becks Run Pumping Station and Hays Mine Treatment Plant.

The construction along Becks Run was supposed to be finished by the end of September.

Becks Run is only open to outbound traffic, between Carson Street and Wagner Avenue. All inbound traffic on Becks Run Road is being detoured onto Wagner until the project is completed.

The extended closure is a result of inclement weather that affected the project’s restoration timeline, Pennsylvania American Water officials said. The road must remain closed until construction is complete for safety reasons.

The continued closure is necessary for the repaving of Becks Run Road, along with repairs to concrete curb and sidewalks and landscaping, Pennsylvania American Water officials said.

The water main installation is a part of an approximately $101 million upgrade project set to improve water treatment processes and ensure that the company's drinking water continues to comply with all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, Pennsylvania American Water officials said.

Motorists are asked to find alternative routes and to avoid the closure area. Signs are posted to guide motorists using the posted detours.

For more information about the closures, or other portions of this project, contact Pennsylvania American Water’s contractor, Kokosing Construction Inc., at 1-877-856-3030.
